National fellowships are prestigious and therefore competitive. To take advantage of every opportunity, apply to all fellowship programs for which you are eligible, in addition to university departmental TA and RA positions. National fellowship programs typically allow funding from only one program at a time; however, there is always the possibility to combine fellowships depending on program policies, the duration of each fellowship program, and whether there are summer internship requirements. Sometimes fellowships can be taken sequentially. If you receive an NPSC Fellowship and another national fellowship, call the NPSC Executive Director to discuss your options, then accept the fellowship which is best for you.
